Transforming dental visits
into relaxing experiences

Sleep Dentistry at Coastal Dental — a gentle, compassionate approach for dental anxiety and complex treatment, with comfort options to suit every patient.

Sleep Dentistry

A gentle approach to dental care with Sleep Dentistry.

Dental anxiety is real, and it's more common than many people realise. Traditional dental procedures, even routine ones, can be a source of stress for numerous individuals. A dental phobia can lead to postponed or avoided appointments — allowing minor issues to become major ones.

Sleep Dentistry, often known as sedation dentistry, is a method where sedatives are used to create a relaxed and easy-going experience for patients during dental treatment. It ranges from minimal sedation — where you're relaxed but fully aware — through to general anaesthetic, where you sleep through the entire procedure. Whatever your comfort level, there's an option for you.

Your Options

Comfort & Sedation Options at Coastal Dental

From simple inhaled pain relief to full general anaesthetic — whatever your comfort level, we have an option to suit. We'll help you choose the right one at your consultation.

Penthrox (Green Whistle)

A fast-acting inhaled pain relief you control yourself — widely known from sporting sidelines and ambulances across Australia. Penthrox takes the edge off within minutes, keeps you fully conscious, and wears off quickly after treatment. A great option for mild anxiety and shorter procedures.

Oral Sedation

A prescribed tablet taken before your appointment leaves you deeply relaxed — often drowsy — while remaining conscious and responsive. Ideal for moderate anxiety, oral sedation makes the appointment feel shorter and far less confronting, with many patients remembering little of it.

IV Sedation

Administered intravenously for a deeper level of relaxation — you drift in a dream-like state, comfortable and largely unaware of the procedure, while remaining responsive. IV sedation suits highly anxious patients and longer or more complex treatments, with continuous monitoring throughout.

General Anaesthetic

For the deepest level of comfort, treatment can be completed under general anaesthetic — you're fully asleep for the entire procedure, and wake with everything done. Ideal for severe dental phobia, extensive treatment plans, and patients who cannot tolerate treatment any other way.

The Benefits

Benefits of Sleep Dentistry — & who should consider it

Sleep dentistry is a remarkable blessing for patients who avoid dental care because of fear — but its benefits reach well beyond anxiety alone.

1
Deep-Seated AnxietyFor those with dental phobia, sedation transforms an ordeal into a manageable — even comfortable — experience, breaking the avoidance cycle for good.
2
Extensive ProceduresComplex or lengthy treatments become far more tolerable, and multiple procedures can often be completed in a single session — fewer visits, less stress.
3
Sensitive Gag Reflex & Difficulty NumbingSedation helps patients with a strong gag reflex, and those who find it hard to achieve full numbness with local anaesthetic alone.
4
Reduced Memory of TreatmentMany patients remember little or nothing of the procedure — which, for anxious patients, makes every future visit easier than the last.
5
Ongoing ComfortSedation is available for everything from a deep clean to full-mouth rehabilitation — comfort isn't reserved for major treatment.

Post-Treatment Care & Considerations

Arrange a Ride Home

After IV sedation or a general anaesthetic, you must have a responsible adult accompany you home — driving isn't permitted for the rest of the day. For lighter options like Penthrox, we'll confirm what's safe for you before you leave.

Temporary Side Effects

Drowsiness, mild grogginess, or temporary forgetfulness are normal after deeper sedation and typically resolve within hours. Take it easy, and avoid important decisions or heavy machinery for the rest of the day.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water after your procedure, and start with light, soft foods once any numbness has fully worn off. We'll give you specific dietary guidance based on the treatment you've had.

Rest

Give yourself the rest of the day to relax and recover. Most patients feel completely back to normal by the next morning — and we'll always follow up to check how you're feeling.

Not necessarily — it depends on the option chosen. With Penthrox, oral sedation, and IV sedation, you remain conscious but deeply relaxed; you can respond to instructions, though many patients remember little of the appointment afterwards. General anaesthetic is the only option where you're fully unconscious throughout. We'll recommend the right level for your anxiety, your treatment, and your medical history — from a gentle take-the-edge-off through to completely asleep.
Yes — when properly assessed, administered, and monitored, sedation is very safe. Before any sedation we conduct a thorough pre-sedation assessment of your medical history, current medications, and individual needs. During treatment, your vital signs are continuously monitored, and deeper sedation options are administered with qualified anaesthetic support. Safety protocols are the foundation of our sleep dentistry service — never an afterthought.
Sleep dentistry helps patients with significant dental anxiety or phobia, those needing long or complex procedures, people with a strong gag reflex, patients who find it difficult to get numb with local anaesthetic alone, and anyone who'd simply prefer to remember less of their appointment. At your consultation we'll review your medical history and discuss the options to find what's right for you.
Sedation is used alongside — not instead of — effective local anaesthesia, so the treatment area is fully numb while you're relaxed. Most patients report feeling nothing more than gentle pressure, and many have little or no memory of the procedure at all. If anything ever feels uncomfortable, you remain able to let us know (except under general anaesthetic, where you're asleep throughout).
It depends on the option used, so we'll confirm what's safe for you on the day. After IV sedation or a general anaesthetic, you must arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you home and stay with you — driving is not permitted for the rest of the day. For lighter options like Penthrox, recovery is much faster, but we'll still assess you before you leave and advise what's safe. When in doubt, bring a companion — it's the simplest way to make the day stress-free.
