Know the Signs

Recognising a dental emergency

Not every dental issue warrants immediate attention, but knowing which situations do can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth.

Severe Toothache

Persistent or spontaneous pain — especially if accompanied by swelling, fever, or a bad taste in the mouth — can signal a serious infection that needs prompt attention before it spreads.

Broken, Chipped, or Knocked-Out Teeth

Whether from an accident, fall, or sports injury — a broken or knocked-out tooth needs immediate care. Fast action, particularly with a knocked-out tooth, can often save it.

Lost Fillings or Crowns

A lost filling or crown leaves the tooth exposed, vulnerable, and often sensitive or painful. Prompt replacement protects the tooth from further damage and infection.

Abscessed Tooth

A dental abscess is a serious infection at the root of a tooth or between the gum and tooth. It can cause severe pain, swelling, and fever — and left untreated, the infection can spread. This always warrants urgent care.

Profuse Bleeding Gums

Gums that bleed heavily and won't stop — especially after trauma — need immediate attention. If bleeding is truly uncontrollable, go straight to a hospital emergency department.

First Aid

Immediate actions to take

While professionals are treating the priority, there are steps you can take at the scene to protect your tooth and manage pain until you reach us. Call us first — we'll guide you through it.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time is critical. Pick the tooth up by the crown — never the root — and rinse it gently in milk if dirty. Try to reinsert it into the socket, or store it in milk, and get to us immediately. Every minute counts.

Chips & Breaks

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water, apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling, and save any broken fragments in milk to bring with you to your appointment.

Toothache

Rinse gently with warm salt water and use over-the-counter pain relief as directed. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum — it burns the tissue. Then call us so we can find and treat the cause.

Schedule Follow-Up Appointments

Emergency care often stabilises the situation — full restoration may need a return visit. We'll book any follow-up before you leave, ensuring your recovery is completed properly, not just started.

Medications

If antibiotics or pain relief are prescribed, take them exactly as directed — and always complete the full course of antibiotics, even once you're feeling better. It matters for preventing reinfection.

Dietary Adjustments

After emergency treatment, stick to soft foods and avoid very hot, cold, hard, or sticky items around the treated area until we give you the all-clear. We'll provide specific guidance for your situation.

Prevention

Preventing dental emergencies

While not all emergencies can be avoided, some precautions can significantly reduce the risk of finding yourself in one.

Regular Dental Check-Ups

Routine examinations catch weak teeth, failing fillings, and brewing infections before they become painful emergencies. Prevention is always calmer than crisis.

Use of Mouthguards

If you play any sport with contact or fall risk, a custom-fitted mouthguard is your teeth's best insurance policy. Ask us about ours — they're comfortable enough that you'll actually wear them.

Avoid Hard Foods

Ice, hard lollies, popcorn kernels, and olive pits are responsible for a remarkable number of cracked teeth. Enjoy carefully — your enamel is strong, but it isn't unbreakable.

Don't Use Teeth as Tools

Opening packages, tearing tape, cracking nuts — teeth are for eating and smiling, nothing else. Reach for scissors instead and save yourself an emergency visit.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

In a dental emergency, knowing what to do can make all the difference. Save our number, and never hesitate to call — our team will guide you through it.

First, assess the severity. Uncontrollable bleeding, significant facial swelling — especially any swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing — or trauma involving possible jaw fracture require hospital emergency care immediately. For severe toothache, knocked-out or broken teeth, lost fillings, and dental abscesses, call us straight away: quick action often makes the difference between saving and losing a tooth, and we'll guide you on exactly what to do before you reach us.
Act fast — time matters enormously. Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white chewing part), never the root. If it's dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline — don't scrub it. If you can, gently place it back in its socket and bite softly on a clean cloth to hold it; if not, store it in milk or tucked inside your cheek, and get to us as quickly as possible. Teeth re-implanted within 30–60 minutes have the best chance of survival. Call us on the way and we'll prioritise you.
We keep time in our schedule for emergencies, and genuine dental emergencies are prioritised — in many cases we can see you the same day. Call us as early as you can on (02) 4306 7053, describe what's happened, and our team will give you first-aid guidance over the phone and get you in as soon as possible.
Call our practice number for guidance. For after-hours situations that can safely wait, we'll see you as a priority when we open — we're open six days a week, from 7:30am most weekdays. However, if you have uncontrolled bleeding, facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, or significant facial trauma, don't wait: go to your nearest hospital emergency department immediately.
We'll never begin treatment without discussing costs first. Your emergency visit starts with an examination and any needed X-rays, after which we'll explain what's happening, what treatment is required, and provide a clear quote before proceeding. Private health fund rebates apply to most emergency treatments, HICAPS lets us process your claim on the spot, and eligible children may be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
