Core Services in Preventative Dentistry

Delivered by Adrienne, Tracy, and our wider clinical team, our comprehensive preventative programme covers every aspect of protecting your oral health — from professional cleans to personalised protective appliances.

Regular Dental Exams and Cleanings at Coastal Dental Gosford
Most Important

Regular Dental Exams & Cleanings

Routine dental check-ups are the cornerstone of preventative care. These visits allow us to monitor your oral health, catch early signs of issues, and offer professional cleanings to remove tartar and plaque build-up that daily brushing simply cannot reach.

By addressing concerns early — before they become painful or complex — we can often prevent them from escalating entirely. We recommend check-ups and cleans every 6 months for most patients.

Dental Sealants at Coastal Dental Gosford
Protective

Dental Sealants

Especially beneficial for children — and adults prone to cavities — dental sealants act as a protective shield against decay. These thin coatings are applied to the chewing surfaces of molars, acting as a physical barrier against food particles and bacteria.

Quick and painless to apply, sealants can dramatically reduce cavity risk in back teeth where most decay occurs. They're one of the most cost-effective preventative investments available in modern dentistry.

Fluoride Treatments at Coastal Dental Gosford
Strengthening

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a mineral that reinforces tooth enamel, making it significantly more resistant to decay. Periodic professional fluoride treatments can help both children and adults maintain stronger teeth and reduce the risk of cavities throughout life.

Applied in just a few minutes during your regular check-up, fluoride treatments are safe, evidence-based, and one of the most effective tools in our preventative arsenal. We tailor the type and frequency to your individual risk level.

Oral Cancer Screenings at Coastal Dental Gosford
Early Detection

Oral Cancer Screenings

Early detection is crucial to the effective treatment of oral cancer. As part of our preventative approach, we offer regular oral cancer screenings as a standard component of every comprehensive examination — catching and addressing any abnormalities at the earliest possible stages.

Oral cancer screenings are quick, painless, and non-invasive. Our dentists examine the soft tissues of the mouth, lips, tongue, and throat for any signs of concern. If anything is detected, early referral dramatically improves outcomes.

Custom Mouthguards

For those engaging in sports or activities that might pose a risk to their teeth, we offer custom-fitted mouthguards. These precision-made protective devices shield the teeth, jaw, and soft tissues from potential trauma — ensuring your smile remains intact even in high-impact situations.

Unlike over-the-counter boil-and-bite mouthguards, our custom-made appliances are fabricated from impressions of your teeth, providing a precise fit, superior protection, and far greater comfort during sport. We also provide night guards for patients who grind their teeth during sleep.

An Oral Health Therapist (OHT) is a university-qualified, AHPRA-registered dental practitioner who combines the skills of a dental hygienist and a dental therapist. OHTs focus on preventative care — professional cleans, sealants, fluoride treatments, oral health assessments, and patient education — as well as treatments like fillings for children and adolescents. At Coastal Dental, our OHTs Adrienne and Tracy lead the preventative care department, working alongside our dentists so every aspect of your oral health is looked after.
Because most dental problems don't hurt until they're advanced. Decay, gum disease and even oral cancer can develop silently — and by the time they cause pain, treatment is usually more complex and more costly. Regular check-ups let us catch issues while they're still small and simple to fix, remove the hardened tartar that home brushing can't, and screen your whole mouth — not just your teeth — at every visit.
For most patients, every 6 months is ideal. If you have gum disease, a history of frequent decay, or other risk factors, Adrienne or Tracy may recommend more frequent cleans — often every 3–4 months — until things stabilise. Your recall interval is tailored to your individual risk profile, not a one-size-fits-all schedule.
Sealants are a thin protective coating applied to the deep grooves of back teeth, where most cavities start. They're most commonly recommended for children as their adult molars come through (around ages 6 and 12), but adults with deep grooves or a history of decay can benefit too. Application is quick, painless, and requires no drilling or anaesthetic.
Not at all. While fluoride is especially valuable for developing teeth, adults benefit too — particularly those with a higher risk of decay, gum recession exposing root surfaces, dry mouth from medications, or orthodontic appliances that make cleaning harder. We'll recommend professional fluoride treatment whenever it will genuinely help your individual situation.
If your sport involves any risk of impact — football, netball, basketball, hockey, boxing, skateboarding and many more — a mouthguard is one of the best investments you can make in your smile. A custom-fitted mouthguard made from impressions of your own teeth offers significantly better protection, fit, and comfort than a boil-and-bite guard from the chemist, and you're far more likely to actually wear it. We also make night guards for patients who grind their teeth during sleep.
